Bruce Doar(陶步思)修改、编辑。

A STUDY OF MONOGRAPHS ON THE WESTERN REGIONS IN THE OFFICIAL HISTORY BOOKS OF THE WESTERN & EASTERN HAN, WEI, JIN, SOUTHERN & NORTHERN DYNASTIES是同作者《两汉魏晋南北朝正史西域传研究》一书的英文版,是作者长期研究西域史和古代中外关系史,对塞种、贵霜、嚈哒以及两汉魏晋南北朝与西域关系史的论着。

PREFACE This book aims to interpret the system of cognition and exposition of the “Xiyu zhuan 西域傳” (Monograph on the Western Regions) in the official histories of the Western Han 漢 and Eastern Han 漢, Wei 魏, Jin 晉, and Southern and Northern dynasties. The so-called “Western Regions” in “Xiyu zhuan 西域傳” in these official histories refers to the vast area to the west of the Yumen 玉門 and Yang 陽 Barriers. Although each monograph contains different accounts, whether detailed or abbreviated, it objectively refers to a “Western Regions” that includes all of what is today Central Asia, most of West Asia and South Asia and a part of North Africa and Europe. It is self-evident that such a vast area cannot be described accurately and fully under the conditions of those times. It should be noted that the starting point of the accounts in the “Xiyu zhuan 西域傳” in these official histories has never been the “Western Regions” or its various states, but rather the political and military achievements registered by the dynasties of the Central Plains in their management of the Western Regions. The starting point determined the nature of these monographs. The ideology of the editors of the “Xiyu zhuan 西域傳”, with the politics and enlightenment, etiquette and customs of absolutism as its core, determined to a large extent their decisions on the abbreviation, acceptance, or rejection of data. It is also unavoidable that similar styles, conventional concepts and the repetitive contents appear in the various monographs. This can also be said to be the key to interpreting the “Xiyu zhuan 西域傳” today.
