　　Professor M.A.K. Halliday is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. He is currently advisor to The Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies at City University of Hong Kong. As a significant contribution to language studies，Professor Halliday has developed a theoretical approach known as "systemic functional linguistics"，incorporating a comprehensive model of grammar which has been applied to English and numerous other languages including Chinese，Japanese，Vietnamese and Thai. His emphasis has always been on theory as a resource for solving problems (he calls it an "appliable" theory)，so that his work has been of interest to a wide audience of those concerned with language，such as educators，computer scientists and practitioners in various professional fields.

　　韩礼德教授，国际知名语言学家，现为澳洲悉尼大学荣誉退休教授及香港城市大学韩礼德语言研究智能应用中心顾问。致力于语言研究工作，创立了“系统功能语言学”(Systemic Functional Linguistics)，其理论涵盖多种文法模式，适用于英语及其他语言，如汉语、日语、越南语及泰语。强调理论能有助解决问题(韩教授称之为“适用性”理论)，故其著作一直深受从事语言工作的人士欢迎，包括教育界、计算机科学界及其他专业的人士。

　　语言系统的并协与互补存在于词汇和文法、“语言作为系统”和“语言作为文本”及说话和书写两种形式之间。本书以“语言系统的并协与互补”为题，旨在对语言的“适用性”作出深入浅出的介绍。 　　本书内容以作者在英国三所大学举办的系列讲座为基础，共有三讲。第一讲专为纪念约翰•辛克莱尔在伯明翰大学举行，第二讲、第三讲分别在利物浦大学和诺丁汉大学举行。这三个讲座均论及语言系统的并协与互补这个概念，而讨论重点则针对各大学语言学研究人员的兴趣而异。 　　词汇和文法之间的互补性在于它们对现实解释的概念功能。它们的互补性是词汇语法作为单独统一层的概念之基础。我们日常谈话的词汇语法让我们能以多种方式解释我们的世界。例如，英文里表达“pain”(痛苦)的词形变化甚多，这正是词汇和文法两者交汇的结果。 　　第二种互补性存在于“语言作为系统”和“语言作为文本”之间。“系统”和“文本”是一个单一现象的两个不同方向。“系统”乃潜在性，是一个有无限多的可能性的系统网；而“文本”则是从这个整体潜在性中作出挑选的过程和结果。“系统”和“文本”之间的互补性得以实现，是透过用例子说明的当前重要活动跟长期模式之间不断的转移；长期模式是由语篇经验建立而成，从而成为处理这个活动的基础。 　　第三种互补性存在于说话和书写这两种形式之间。这两种形式在组织意思方面的策略以及控制复杂度方面的方法均有所不同，因此产生互补性。
