长期以来，外国朋友对汉语学习有一种观念，认为汉语难学。本词典用语义关联的模式，将词语按主题进行分类，用图解的方式解释词语，帮助学习者轻松地达到学习效果，为消除汉语难学的传统观念提供了全方位的解决方案。
本词典包括15个主题，主题单元下又细化出142个话题，共收录约4200个常用词语。主题主要根据国家汉办《国际汉语教学通用课程大纲》划分，覆盖日常生活的方方面面；话题则采用大场景或连续小图的方式展现真实生活情景，让学习者在较短的时间内，以轻松有趣的方式理解词义，快速掌握词语。在词汇选择标准上，本着既重词频又重实用的原则，参照了中国媒体和各有关国家汉语教材的词频统计结果。除了名词、动词、形容词以外，还收录了大量词组，以方便学习者了解词语的搭配关系。
本词典具有两个特点：一是词汇的收录不局限于表现单一文化，在强调突出中国文化元素的同时，也兼顾文化的多元性。学习者不仅可以加深对中国文化的了解，提高汉语水平，还可以利用书中词汇描述其他文化现象；二是兼顾中国传统与现代两个方面，通过相关话题介绍传统文化，同时又与当代中国人生活紧密联系，为读者提供全景式的中国体验。
本词典每个词条包括简体汉字、拼音和英语释义，并在图中相应的位置标出序号。拼音以《现代汉语词典》(第5版)和《新华拼写词典》为标准。书后附有中文和英文索引，中文索引中还特别标出简体和繁体不同的词条。
根据学习者需求，本词典还配有网络版，通过趣味动漫和人机互动，为学习者提供了词语听读、跟读、汉字书写和词语查询等多种多媒体辅助学习方式。学习者还可以根据个人需要，进行游戏化的词汇练习，以巩固已学知识。

My Chinese Picture Dictionary is designed to help students to learn Chinese words in meaningful contexts through engaging illustrations and photos. It includes 15 thematic units，142 graphic topics and more than 4，000 commonly used words. The 15 units are categorized according to the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education published by the Office of Chinese Language Council International. They are further specified into 142 topics to cover all aspects of daily life. The word lists of the dictionary include both single word entries and phrases. Nouns，verbs as well as many prepositions and adjectives are defined by situational artwork and presented in thematic scenes. To demonstrate the natural use of words in conjunction with one another，many phrases are also introduced.
Unlike many other dictionaries on the market，My Chinese Picture Dictionary presents new vocabulary that is useful not only in Chinese culture but also in Western societies. This enables students to learn and use Chinese words to talk about different cultures. Another main difference between our Chinese dictionary and others is that our book is not only intended to help students to understand traditional Chinese culture such as teahouses，Peking opera，rituals and customs，etc.，but also the modern lives of Chinese people such as their housing，schooling and work. It intends to bring out the real China with combined characteristics of tradition and contemporary society in vivid color.
My Chinese picture dictionary uses simplified characters and each word or phrase is companies by a pinyin and an English translation. The pinyin is spelled according to Xiandai Hanyu Cidian (现代汉语词典 第5版 Modern Chinese Dictionary 5th version) and Xinhua Pinxie Cidian (新华拼写词典 Xinhua Pinyin Spelling Dictionary). To help students to find a word in the dictionary easily，both Chinese and English indexes are provided at the end of the book. In addition，the Chinese index also provides the traditional version of each character in order to allow traditional character learners to use the dictionary easily.
The online version of My Chinese Picture Dictionary contains additional vocabulary practice through activities，games and word webs.It can be customized for individual use and offers students more options.
