为庆祝《中国语文》创刊50周年，2002年6月27日至29日，由中国社会科学院语言研究所、新加坡南洋理工大学、徐州师范大学、首都师范大学共同主办，江西南昌大学文学院承办的“庆祝《中国语文》创刊50周年国际学术研讨会”在江西南昌举行。
会议回顾了50年来《中国语文》所取得的成就，并就今后如何继承务实与创新相结合的办刊传统，进一步推动中国语言学事业的发展提出了新的思路。本刊编委、匿名审稿人和国内语言学刊物的同行应邀出席了会议。参加本次学术讨论会并提交论文的还有来自中国内地、香港、台湾和美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、日本、新加坡等地的百余位学者(论文题目见“附录二”)。
此前，2002年6月3日，《中国语文》编辑部在北京举办编辑出版工作座谈会。对《中国语文》的办刊宗旨、选题方向、栏目设计以及如何引导学术规范等问题进行了讨论。中国社会科学院副院长江蓝生，语言研究所所长沈家煊、副所长董琨，曾经在《中国语文》担任过主要负责工作的陈章太、于根元、徐枢、饶长溶、施关淦，曾经在编辑部工作多年的老同志，以及商务印书馆的领导王维新，出席了座谈会。(关于两个会议的详尽报道请参阅《中国语文》2002年第5期)
为集中反映目前汉语语言学研究的最新成果，如实记录庆祝《中国语文》创刊50周年活动的全貌，《中国语文》编辑部2002年出版了3期纪念专刊(论文题目见“附录一”)；之后，编辑为这本《庆祝〈中国语文〉创刊50周年学术论文集》。参与编辑工作和本次学术活动的有《中国语文》编辑部的全体工作者：侯精一、刘丹青、方梅、林连通、施关淦、郭小武、刘祥柏、陈丽、王冬梅、隋晨光、孔晓、丁欣兰。

《中国语文》1952年7月创刊，是国内语言学界的权威刊物，在国外语言学界也很有学术地位。2002年6月，《中国语文》编辑部在南昌举办了“庆祝中国语文创刊50周年国际学术讨论会”。《中国语文》编辑部从会议论文中选取41篇收入论文集。论文包括语音、语法、词汇、方言、少数民族语言、文字等几方面，学术质量均比较高。
