In this issue, TWOC looks behind the smart software to put a human face on the humble deliveryman. We hear tales of business and brotherhood, high risks and low rewards, that will certainly give pause for thought next time you curse your pizza for being five minutes overtime. Elsewhere, as hipster versions land abroad, we go in search of the authentic jianbing; return to the forgotten roots of overseas Chinese; take an unswerving look at the history of school uniforms; wonder whether knowledge has a price; and try to buy a live chicken. Well, our pizza was late…

Wheel life China
The are the linchpins of the e-commerce boom and even our urban middle-class lifestyle, but few consider the everyday pressures endured by the drivers who hand us our hot meals and mail. We speak to couriers and takeout drivers about life in the fast lane, between cut-throat competition and kinship.

Live Dreaming
It’s live steaming without the glam: Kuaishou documents real China, as millions of rural strivers compete for the attention and wallet of a vast online audience with bizarre and unique videos. Are the days of buying your own chicken to take home, pluck and eat coming to an end? But there’ll always be some customers who cry foul…
